September 1: Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Late Today and Tonight

Very heavy rainfall is expected this afternoon into tonight, with strong winds likely.

Updates

Updates on the rain and storm threat

6:15pm:
1. A line of storms is developing to our west, and will move in around 6:30pm.

2. Flooding of basements and roads, in addition to white-out driving conditions, remain possible.

3. A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 7pm. This does not mean a tornado has been spotted in our area. It does mean conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes, and in fact, a few have started to form in other areas.

Synopsis:

-The worst of the rain begins around 3pm

-Heavy rainfall this evening until 11pm

-Total rain of 2 to 3 inches, localized totals of 4.5 inches

-Strong wind gusts likely at times

Details:

A soaking 2 to 3 inches of rain are expected, with localized totals of 3 to 4.5 inches possible in a few neighborhoods.

Rain is expected to begin between 3:00 and 3:20 this afternoon. It will come in rounds, continuing until 11pm.

Strong winds are likely at times, which could cause tree limbs to fall. Additionally, when combined with very moist soil, a few trees will likely fall.

What this means for you:

1. The heavy and torrential rains may make it very difficult to see when driving. An earlier dismissal (2:30 or so) ahead of the storms may be a good idea.

2. If you have any drainage issues, whether in classrooms or other areas, be aware that this rain will likely be a problem.

3. If your electricity is prone to being knocked out by falling tree limbs, be aware there is a distinct possibility of this.

4. There is a chance of a tornado occurring in our vicinity. If a tornado warning were to be issued, seek shelter in a lower floor away from windows.
