Forecast & Discussion
Forecaster: The SWIS
Last update: 4:45am November 1
Synopsis
A powerful low pressure system will move through, dumping a few inches of snow throughout central Maryland, in addition to icy conditions late this evening. Impacts are expected to begin late this morning, posing a threat to dismissal today. Additional problems may arise tomorrow, in arriving to school.
Details
Snow is expected to begin between 10:30 and 11 am this morning, becoming heavier by 1pm. At first, temperatures will be just above freezing, allowing for it to melt on contact with the ground. Additionally, the precipitation will be a wet mix of rain and snow.
Towards lunchtime, with lots of cold air and heavy precipitation rates, a quick one to two inches is expected to fall in the 1-1:45pm timeframe. Additional accumulations are expected as the afternoon progresses.
The slick 2-3 inches of snow on roadways in the 3-5pm timeframe (dismissal times) will pose a significant hazard. A dismissal before 1pm is best.
Snow will taper off between 3 and 4 this afternoon, but temperatures will drop off further, meaning that the snow won't melt away. This evening, snow will start up again around 7:30pm, and will transition to freezing rain for a few hours, followed by a tapering off near midnight. This will remain frozen overnight, with temperatures below 32 degrees in addition the snow and ice causing an antecedent cold.
Tomorrow morning, significant delay may occur in extracting vehicles from the ice, as well as getting roadways clear. Expect delays in arrival.
This forecast is a sample of how we might forecast a classic storm, which arrives in the late morning hours, first as mixed precipitation before transitioning to all snow. Plus snow is expected later that evening...
